DI 1 Appointments in ADRIC

56 men held the rank of DI1 at one time or another. Most of these were company commanders. The early (less successful) appointments were heavy on age, medals, and army rank. Only 4 were born in Ireland. 3 committed suicide and 2 were KIA in Ireland, and another murdered in Palestine in 1923.

These men should have been top rate, but few were. In addition they were put in place without much in the way of administrative back up - Company budgets were not controlled, and "paperwork" was not a priority.

The most difficult of these DI1s to research has been C Waller who from 1 Apr 1921 to 2 Jul 1921 was in command of Depot Coy , effectively the number 2 or number 3 in the ADRIC, who managed to come and go with virtually nothing being recorded on him

According to Crozier, the first 5 companies formed soon lost their commanders (note C Coy did not appear to lose its original commander till early 1921)

A Coy

• 3 Aug 1920 to 28 Sep 1920 J.H.M.Kirkwood,D.S.O. Commanding Officer until he resigned. Crozier indicates that Andrews took over for a period before GV Jones arrived. I don't see how the dates would have allowed that
• 29 Sep 1920 to 2 Nov 1920 GV Jones is Company Commander until he resigns from ADRIC to take up a commission in Regular Army
• 2 Nov 1920 to 1 Dec 1920 E A Wood was in Command A Coy until he returned to Dublin to take over as 2nd in Command ADRIC.
• 1 Dec 1920 to 7 Mar 1921 C.W.V Webb moved up from 2nd in Command to Company Commander and then Webb was transferred to RIC as a Permanent Cadet
• 4 Mar 1921 to 22 Sep 1921 . Champion de Cresigny he resigned
• 22 Sep 1921 to Jan 1922. A Hulse until demobilisation

B Coy

• 6 Aug 1920 to 30 Oct 1920 I suspect it was LB Bumstead . He reverted to DI3 on 30 Oct 1920 from either DI1 or DI2
• 28 Oct 1920 to 21 Dec 1920 ME Rouse (reverts to T/Cadet)
• 20 Dec 1920 to 2 Jul 1921. RHL Conlan , he went on to command of Depot Coy
• 2 Jul 1921 to Jan 1922 EE Barrows became Company Commander

C Coy

• 27 Jul 1920 to 13 Feb 1921 Buxton Smith when he reverted to T/Cadet prior to resigning
• 21 Feb 1921 until 23 Apr 1921. A Hulse
• 23 Apr1921 to Jan 1922 RM Taylor . Promoted Company Commander from 2 i/c. Given temp command after Hulse was wounded

D Coy

• 24 Aug 1920 to 30 Nov 1920 AP Nichol The first commander of D Coy was dismissed by Crozier because of the discipline problems in Galway
• 30 Nov 1920 to 19 Feb 1921 Lt Col F H W Guard replaced him and Guard himself went on to become number 2 in ADRIC when Wood took over from Crozier in Feb 1921.
• 19 Feb 1921 to 24 May 1921 G F A Grubbe became Commander of D Company until relinquished command and resigned ADRIC at his own request
• 24 May 1921 to 15 Nov 1921 Capt W H King in command D Coy until he returns to the army
• 15 Nov 1921 to Jan 1922. WE Waitt Company commander

E Coy

• 18 Sep 1920 to 19 Nov 1920. GV Dudley is Company Commander when he got a permanent RIC position. I think that he had been running the company on a DI1 grading, but cannot get the date of command
• 15 Nov 1920 to Jan 1922 . SF Sharp becomes Company Commander and remained in command of E Coy until demobilisation of ADRIC
• 23 Nov 1921 to Jan 1922 F Grubbe was posted to E Coy as apparently a DI1

F Coy

• 18 Sep 1920 to 26 Oct 1920 . KGS Ross becomes Commander F Coy, until he moves on to Permanent Cadet
• 26 Oct to 12 Feb 1921. WL King was the most high profile of the Company Commanders. He was suspended during his murder trial and then moved to other companies
• 12 Feb 1921 to Jan 1922. RK Caparn becomes Company Commander following King's Arrest. He appears to hold the position until the demobilisation of ADRIC in Jan 1922

G Coy

• 5 Oct 1920 to 2 Feb 1921 Lt/Col A J Andrews Resigned from ADRIC
• WH Simpson was in Temp Command of G Coy from 15 Nov 1920 to 15 Jan 1921 when Andrews was sick.
• 2 Feb 1920 until 15 Nov 1921 Lt Col H S L Hemming (He was suspended from 15 Nov 1921)
• 19 Nov 1921 AH Taylor assumed temporary command of G Coy from 19 Nov 1921 to Jan 1922. He was a DI3

H Coy

• H Lyle 21 Oct 1920 to 29 Oct 1920
• 30 Oct 1920 to 15 Apr 1921 J A MacKinnon was first company commander. He was murdered
• 19 Apr 1921 to 22 Nov 1921 EH Petre replaced him as Coy Commander until he was allowed to resign on compassionate grounds
• 22 Nov 1921 to Jan 1922 AW Crees came from 2nd in command of Q Coy and commanded H Coy until demobilisation.

I Coy

• 22 Nov 1920 to 1 Apr 1921 EL Mills was the Commander of I Coy from the start until he was recalled to Depot prior to resigning.
• 1 Apr 1921 to Jan 1922. H Wilkinson Promoted Coy Commander from 2nd in Command of H Coy. He held the position until the demobilisation of the ADRIC in Jan 1922

J Coy

• 1920 Nov 10 to 10 Feb 1921 J C Fillery was the first CO and he was posted back to Depot
• 11 Feb 1921 to 25 Feb 1921. Seafield Grant was promoted to Company Commander and was killed in the Coolavohig Ambush on 25 Feb 1921
• 28 Feb 1921 to 28 May 1921 WP Gill . Gill then reverted to T/Cadet before being discharged medically unfit
• 28 May 1921 to Jan 1922. CEA Williams took over as company commander (he was a DI2 in J Coy from 27 Apr, and was temporary Coy Commander from then, as Gill was sick.)

K Coy

• 1920 Nov 21 to 17 Feb 1921. Promoted to Coy commander O W R G Latimer was relieved of the command following Cork Burning. Latimer was transferred to "Q" Company as 2nd in Command on 2 Mar 1921
• 1921 Feb 17. P de Haviland posted K Coy as Coy Commander. This ties in with the announcement in parliament that Latimer had been suspended over "Burning of Cork". 1921 Feb 28 he was posted to O Coy and relinquishes command of K Coy
• 28 Feb 1921 No replacement was appointed as K Coy was broken up

L Coy

• 17 Dec 1920 to 7 Feb 1921 W F Martinson appointed DI1. He moved to be Co Commander at Depot
• 7 Feb 1921 to 1 Apr 1921 ?
• 1 Apr 1921 to Jan 1922. WE Crossey becomes Company Commander of L Coy and appears to hold the position until demobilisation of ADRIC in Jan 1922

M Coy

• 1 Jan 1921 to Jan 1922 D Wainwright in Command M Coy

N Coy

• 11 Jan 1921 to 12 Feb 1921 A H Daniel Coy Commander. He was an an unallocated DI1 from 27 Dec 1920 to his appointment to command N Coy on 11 Jan 1921, but I think he was effectively the Coy Commander from the earlier date)
• 12 Feb 1921 to Jan 1922 HS Barber Company Commander and he appears to have held the position until demobilisation

O Coy

• 27 Jan 1921 to 7 Feb 1921 A Hulse posted on to C Coy as Company Commander.
• 28 Feb 1921 to Jan 1922 . P de Havilland promoted Company Commander and he remains Company Commander with O Coy until demobilisation. He had been sent temporarily to K Coy from 17 to 28 Feb as Coy Commander as part of the winding up of K Coy

P Coy

• 27 Jan 1921to 3 Feb 1921. M L Cope appears to be the first P Coy Commander (He was in ADRIC from 27 Jan 1921 till 3 Feb 1921, so was hardly in the job). He was "permitted to resign"
• 3 Feb 1921 to 8 Mar
• 9 Mar 1921 to 8 Dec 1921. EW Johnston . He was struck off strength as a deserter. There were problems with the Coy Accounts
• 9 Dec 1921 to demobilisation. RB Bettson appointed Commander of P Coy

Q Coy

• 25 Mar 1921 to 1 Apr 1921 T P Ryan was company commander, he relinquished command for "special duties", but appears to have continued to be attached to Q Coy with "special duties" and still a DI1, until 16 Jul 1921
• 11 Apr 1921 to 31 May 1921. TO Fox posted to Q Coy as Company Commander until he was permitted to resign on compassionate grounds.
• 31 May 1921 to 2 Jul 1921. M Godfrey posted command of Q Coy until he went to a permanent position in RIC
• 2 Jul 1921 to Jan 1922 . W P Wood was appointed CO and was still in that position on demobilisation of the division.

R Coy

• 16 Apr 1921 to 24 May 1921WL King moved here from F Coy until he moved on to D Coy Oddly he appears to have been on leave for the whole of his time in command of R Coy
• 24 May 1921 to Jan 1922 H Bannerman was CO from 24 May 1921 and stayed in command until demobilisation in Jan 1922

S Coy

• 28 May 1921 to 17 Sep 1922 Major A Hulse

Z Coy

• The are no officers appointed to Z Coy. I suspect that Z Coy is the Police Advisors Office although some of the men working there were not ADRIC

• Aug 1920 to 13 Oct 1920 ?
• 13 Oct 1920 to 21 Dec 1921 TMcG Greer He reverted to T/Cadet, then did not leave until 15 Mar 1921.
• 21 Dec to 7 Feb ?
• 7 Feb 1921 to 1 Apr 1921 WF Martinson was Company Commander at Depot. He moved on to be Adjutant
• 1 Apr 1921 to 2 Jul 1921 C Waller Medically unfit

HQ Coy

• 24 Aug 1920 to 21 Nov 1920 EL Mills , he is signing himself as Adjutant in Nov 1920 but at the same time as Commander of I Coy . The entry in the Numeric Register is not possible to read but gives him as DI1 and "? ? Major" as his position in ADRIC
• 21 Nov 1920 to 19 Feb 1921 TG McFie McFie resigned at the same time as Crozier
• 19 Feb 1921 to 1 Apr 1921 F Hollingworth moved down to A/Adjutant
• 1 Apr 1921 to Jan 1922 . W F Martinson appointed as Adjutant ADRIC. 1921 Dec 29. Kings Police Medal gazetted. William F. Martinson, District Inspector, Royal Irish Constabulary. “ DI Martinson has served as Adjutant of the Auxiliary Division RIC for the past 8 months and has shown untiring energy and devotion to duty”.

• 4 Mar 1921 to Jan 1922 . CVV Webb posted to "HQ". He appears to have been paid by RIC at this point. He is DI1 and the entry says "assumes command"
