56 men held the rank of DI1 at one time or another. Most of these were company commanders. The early (less successful) appointments were heavy on age, medals, and army rank. Only 4 were born in Ireland. 3 committed suicide and 2 were KIA in Ireland, and another murdered in Palestine in 1923.
These men should have been top rate, but few were. In addition they were put in place without much in the way of administrative back up - Company budgets were not controlled, and "paperwork" was not a priority.
The most difficult of these DI1s to research has been C Waller who from 1 Apr 1921 to 2 Jul 1921 was in command of Depot Coy , effectively the number 2 or number 3 in the ADRIC, who managed to come and go with virtually nothing being recorded on him
