Roy Douglas Abbott Goldthorpe

He is in 1939 Register as Roy Douglas Bayliss and appears to have lived his life as Bayliss

Dad was born in Leyton, London on 28th December 1909 and named Roy Douglas Robert Goldthorpe although his birth is registered in West Ham, Essex. His father, Douglas Goldthorpe was born in 1886 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. He married Dad’s mother, Lily May Abbott (1877 – 1961) in Paddington, London in 1909. Lily was born in Nottingham, England, the daughter of George Walton Abbott and Mrs. Abbott (nee Hayes) and had six siblings – Leslie, Evangeline, Eric Granville, Douglas Martin, Ernest Walton and Stanley. Lily divorced Douglas Goldthorpe in 1920. (The National Archives, Kew). Lily died in Barnet, Middlesex in 1961. Lily had a daughter Anne. I do not know whether she was a Goldthorpe or Bayliss. Anne had a daughter named Jenny. Granma mentions both in a letter to Dad in 1959 written from “The Lawns”. Lower Sea Lane, Charmouth, Dorset. It appears that Dad did not get on with his biological father and after divorcing in 1920, Lily married Mr. Bayliss whose name Dad took officially by Deed Poll as recorded in 1947, although he must have assumed the name Bayliss much earlier than 1947 as his first wife, Marjorie, took the name Bayliss
