There is no birth nor death record for Ethelbert Davies, but from 1918 to 1945 he certainly lived as this name. His army record gives wife Helen (but no maiden name nor details of marriage given as in 1904) there were two children Isabella b1912 and Jane born 1913. Again no cert produced, but he appears to have got 2 Bapt Certs from the clergyman at Accrington (St Andrews Parish?) who also seems to have confirmed the marriage, but army were dubious about accepting any of this. Since 1880, a total of 518 boys have been given the name Ethel while 277,033 girls were named Ethel.
He was in fact born as Ethel Davies, but aged 6 is given as a son. He marries in 1894 as Ethel. and it is the Army that changes him to Ethelbert
1875 Jan 13. Born Lancs. The 1911 census says he was born Church , Lancs. Church is part of Blackburn Reg District, and there was a "Ethel Davies " born there then

1894 Oct 20 Married Lancs (in RIC record)

1901 census Living at Accrington

1911 census at Accrington (this fits with a 1894 marriage)

At this point he seems to switch from Mary to Helen as a wife, listing his wife as Helen on the Army form. I don't think he ever married Helen
