Presumably a disaster happened to the family , as by 1908 , when he entered the army as 1 15 year old, he stated that he had been at Gordons Boys Home. The Gordon Boys’ Home was originally intended for destitute boys who were old enough to work and able to help pay for their keep. However, many younger boys were admitted to the Home which meant at times the income was quite low and constant funds were needed from outside. When he does enlist he gives mother Ada as NOK
