The enlistment on October 30, 1915 was with the 85th Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders - 222908) but was transferred to the No. 2 Construction Battalion as a Lieutenant. The No. 2 Construction Battalion (an all Black battalion) served in France with the majority of the men being assigned to the No. 5 Canadian Forestry Corps (Jura Group).
