1917 Jul 22 Clayton was a pilot with 37 Squadron and on 22 July 1917 he took part in an operational mission against a raid by 21 Gotha bombers targeting Harwich and Felixstowe. He left from Goldhanger Aerodrome (a satellite of Stow Maries) and was airborne from 08.32 to 10.07 but did not engage the enemy. We have no information on how long he was with 37 Squadron nor, apart from his service record, any information on the rest of his RFC/RAF career.

Notice is hereby given that the Partnership which has for some time past been carried on by Charles Vaughan Clayton, of Alcester Road, Studley, in the county of Warwick, Wireless Engineers and Leonard Keith Wainwright, Wireless Engineer, and Phyllis Evelyn Wainwright, Spinster, both of The Old Vicarage, Studley aforesaid, under the style of " SUPREME RADIO SERVICES," at Alcester Road, Studley aforesaid, being the trade or business of Wireless Engineers, was this day dissolved by mutual consent, and that in future the said business will be carried out by the said Charles Vaughan Clayton alone.
