1911 Oct 10. On SS Pomeranian from UK to Canada. He is a returning Canadian who has lived for 4 years in Ingersoll, Vancouver for 4 years 1907-1911.

However soon after he left for Canada without resigning and considerably in debt, “a position brought about by my not having sufficient funds to carry on & also having been left in a hole by certain of my relations.” The Army tracked him down and allowed him to resign on a promise that he repay the money owed.

1912 Apr 10. 3rd Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment, Second Lieutenant Geoffrey R. Austin resigns his commission.

1913 Apr 1. He then enlisted in Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) on 1 April 1913 (No.2357). The regiment left for England soon after the war began and arrived in France on 4 May 1915.

1914 Attests to Canadian Expeditionary Force. His next of kin is Mrs Willoughby of Holmlea, Helmgold, Oswestry. He only owns up to 1year and 6 month in Lord Strathcona's Horse. The South Staffs Service seems to have been "forgotten"

1917 Apr 17 After attending cavalry cadet school, Austin was commissioned and posted to the North Irish Horse, joining the 1st Regiment in the field. Austin saw much action in the last months of the war, leading cyclist patrols ahead of the advancing battalions of V Corps (see regimental diary).

Geoffrey Ruthvan Austin, aged 53, of 1139 Ninth Avenue East, died in hospital here yesterday. He was born at Bolton, Lancashire, England, and came to Calgary in 1929. He was employed as an engineer with the Burns & Co., and was a member of the Church of England. During the Great War he joined Lord Strathcona Horse (R.C.), at Valcartier camp in Quebec, and went overseas in 1914 as a sergeant.
