Odd goings on here. The man has to be born in 1905 from all the evidence, so was only 16 when he joined ADRIC. He could not have been an army officer . I have no idea how he got into the ADRIC. He was claiming a 1900 birth when he went off to South Africa in 1923, presumably to be over 21 on the ships papers. He travelled with GH Williams who had also been in ADRIC in G Coy

An internet site gives   Charles Hugh Montel, Captain, 3rd Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment and Nigeria Regiment, of Bridge House, Lamberhurst, Kent, b. 1 Apr 1880 at New Valley Estate, Dickoya, Ceylon, educ Haileybury, served in the Boer War 1899-1900 and East and West Africa 1914-18, m. 7 Jul 1904, Ethel Marion, youngest dau of Major Lionel James Archer Chapman, R.A., and his wife Georgina Hunter, dau of George Hunter Thompson. He d. 16 Jan 1945 and she d. 13 Dec 1965 (Will dated 24 Dec 1958 and proved 22 Jun 1966) and was buried at Hardham, near Pulborough, Sussex having had issue:

1.       Lionel Innes Montel, Corporal, 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), R.A.C., b. 1905, educ Wellington, m. 1931 in London, Phyllis M. Jackson, d. 10 May 1940 in a vehicle accident and was buried in Worksop Cemetery having had issue: 1 dau.

2.       Patrick Bunbury Montel, bank manager, of Oak Tree Cottage, Marley Mount, Sway, Lymington, b. 8 May 1910 at Blairlomond, Ceylon, m. 4 Sep 1943 at Kampala, Uganda, Gertrude Winifred, dau of Harold Frederick Angell, Headmaster of Palmer’s Preparatory School. He d. 14 Oct 1985 and she d. 15 Oct 1997 having had issue: 1 son and 1 dau.

1923 Oct 4. Leaves UK for Cape Town. Claiming to be a 23 year old Planter of 36 Goldhawk Rd, London and travels with Gilbert H Williams of same address

1931 Oct/Dec . Marriage to Phyliss M Jackson (1907 - 2006) in London

1937 Apr/Jun . Married Rhona Eileen Levy in London (she remarried 6 months after his death)

1939 Register. His wife is staying in Somerset with her mother. He is not there

1940 May 10. Corporal Lionel Innes Montel Toller, 4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), Royal Armoured Corps, in a vehicle accident and buried in Worksop (Retford Road) Cemetery. CWGC Aged 35
