After leaving the ADRIC he seemed to be somewhat dependent on casual employment and lived periodically with his aunt, Lottie Dean, at Hintlesham. A family member recalled being presented by him with a very large mongrel dog, which quickly had to be found another home. One job which he undertook, while staying with Aunt Lottie was as a turnstile operator at the Wembley Exhibition in 1924 and 25. He is somewhat scurrilously described at that time in a book entitled 'Suffolk Childhood' by Simon Dewes. (Hutchinson 1929)
