Lt William Ewart Mills. 5th Lancers

I cannot tie any to MIC address. 5th Lancers is correct.. There is no William E Mills born in London between 1880 and 1900

I gave up in the end, as the two halves of my research do not fit

• The RIC Register has him as William E Mills , born 7 Sep 1888 in London (with a secondary connection to Yorkshire). He claims to have been an officer in RMF
• There is a William Mills born 7 Sep 1888 in Londonderry, with a father Samuel, a coachman
• 1911 William Ewart Mills , and Army Bandsman married in York. Father William Ewart Mills, a Mason,
• 1914 Aug 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers at Dublin, part of 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Cavalry Division. Moved to France. William Ewart Mills
• 1918 Feb 23 commissioned in Reserve Regt of Cavalry
• 1920 Sep 10 joins ADRIC
• 1921 divorce article below places William Ewart Mills in ADRIC at Westport, as on MIC & says he is army bandsman ib Marriage cert below
• It seems to be the ame man though both halves. I can only conlude that he lied about the name of his father when he married, or that it was wrongly written down

1901 census at Duke Street, Waterside, Londonderry, with his family (his father died in May 1900)

1911 Jan 21 Married Sarah Ann Nottingham in Selby, Yorks. He was an Army Bandsman

1914 Aug . 5th (Royal Irish) Lancers at Dublin, part of 3rd Cavalry Brigade in Cavalry Division. Moved to France.

1914 Aug 15 Landed in France.

1921 Feb 11. Relinquishes appointment of A/CQM

1921 Feb 23. Posted to E Coy . He applies for medals from Westport, see MIC.

1921 Mar 16. Promoted Section Leader

1921 Nov. Divorces his wife

1922 Jan 18. Discharged on demobilisation of ADRIC

“E” Company finally departed Westport on 18 January 1922 and were disbanded following the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

1959 Nov 13. He retired after 24 yeaars as head master of Cope School Loughgall
