Sidney/Sydney Hugh Joseph Ferguson

1890 Mar 3. Born Castries, St Lucia from RIC roll. He was son of Duncan A J Ferguson and grandson of Peter J K Ferguson

If we are talking about the same Sydney Ferguson, I understand that he was born at Mount Pleasant, Castries, St Lucia. Mount Pleasant was the family house and is now the location of the St Lucia Folk Research Centre (http://www.stluciafolk.org). They may be able to help find details of Sydney Ferguson’s birth in the local register. The Ferguson family had been on St Lucia there for a few generations. My grandmother told me that her father and all his male siblings were sent from the West Indies to Stonyhurst College boarding school (http://www.stonyhurst.ac.uk) in Lancashire for their education. You may be able to find out more about Sydney Ferguson there. I will try and do some digging for you on Sydney Ferguson to find out more about him. My mother has a book with her mother’s family tree written down. I will ask her what is written in it about Sydney Ferguson – for example his full name. I will also ask her about the photo I referred to. It may be possible to identify his unit/regiment from the uniform he is wearing.

Heritage lost. In March 2018 St Lucia lost this building to a fire. It was built in the mid 1800s and was one of the few preserved 19th century buildings left on island. Scottish immigrant Peter Joseph Kinnier Ferguson built the house at Mount Pleasant, overlooking Castries, to escape the malaria infected city. The house was eventually sold to Harold Devaux who, in 1948 added a top floor to what had been a bungalow. PJK Ferguson was Attorney General of the island
