The Broken Sword records that after Crozier's resignation, Wood was not happy about the state of the accounts, and got Conlin to audit the accounts. When Macfie's safe was opened it was discovered that Macfie had been keeping an unofficial account, and irregularities were found in the accounts. There was a discrepancy of £359 in accounting for fines money submitted directly to the Adjutant by Company Commanders.
